Bees make academic decision
Brentford have today announced that they will be opening a football academy for the 2012/2013 season - in turn shutting down the current Centre of Excellence.
Under the new Elite Player Performance Programme academies will be Graded from Category One to Four (One being the most elite) with the better rated academies gaining more funding from the FA and Premier League.
Crucially the proposed academy will qualify as Category Two - allowing Brentford's talent to play against the best in the nation. Some premier league clubs are also expected to set up Category Two academies.
This represents a significant investment from Brentford FC and has been backed by the board of directors and Matthew Benham.
It would appear that the long term vision for the club is to bring more players through to the first team from the youth set up, something that Brentford have generally struggled to do over recent years - Reading transfer target Karleigh Osborne aside.
