Brentford FC, assisted by the cash of Matthew Benham, yesterday purchased the 7.6 acre Lionel Road plot for the purpose of building a new 15,000 capacity stadium
The land was purchased from Barratt Homes who originally intended to develop the plot in conjunction with Brentford FC but pulled out due to a slowed housing market
Following the move, the current Griffin park site would be used to build family housing
Brentford will be submitting plans to Hounslow Council within the next 12 months and plan to move into the new stadium by the 2016/2017 season - with plans in place to increase capacity to 20,000 if necessary in the future.
