French Forward Was Fancied
Heading into the weekend, on Friday in fact, Brentford were able to complete the first part of what Dean Smith hopes can become a forward double act after Neal Maupay was secured from St Etienne.
An undisclosed fee secured the forward, 20, on a four year deal.
The former French youth international, who has appeared for his country at various levels up to, and including, U21 level was loaned to second flight club Brest last season.
Having also spent time with Nice, Maupay actually played for the against Brentford in a pre-season friendly back in 2014, scoring on that occasion, the forward was in-demand according to Phil Giles.
The Co-Director of Football told the Official Website clubs in England and overseas were interested before the Bees secured his signature, much to his delight.
'There were many clubs both in England and overseas that were interested in signing Neal this summer. I am very proud of the team effort from everyone at Brentford who contributed to selling our club and our ambition to Neal. He is a good player and a good man.
Adding: 'Having made the decision to join Brentford he honoured that agreement despite having other clubs interested in acquiring his services. We look forward to working with him over the coming seasons.'
Smith went on to say Maupay literally ticks all the boxes he would want and looks forward to the Frenchman getting started at Griffin Park.
'As Phil has said, he is a player that we have been tracking for a long while. He fits all the profiles we set when we look for a player. He has a really good personality and character to go with his skill level. We are very lucky to have got him and I look forward to working with him.'
Sky Sports reports Brentford paid £1.6m for Maupay with is said the Bees are hoping 'Ollie Watkins will also join from Exeter'.
