Smith On Nottingham Forest

Smith On Nottingham Forest

Head coach Dean Smith has been previewing the game against Nottingham Forest this weekend as our home Championship campaign kicks off.

Welcoming back former manager Mark Warburton for the tie, Smith opened by reflecting on the EFL Cup victory over Wimbledon in midweek and speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media for his pre game press conference, he explained.

'I'm pleased that we got through. There were some really good parts to the game, good control of the football. I thought we should have killed the game off a lot earlier, and I said that after the game. They'll do alright in League One, they are a decent team and it was a good test for us. It gave the opportunity for all our players to have minutes this season, we made ten changes and have pretty much everyone fit for Saturday.'

Moving attentions forward to this weekend's tie, Smith was hoping for a positive start and all three points to get our Championship campaign up and running following the defeat to Sheffield United on the opening day of the season.

'I'm looking forward to the first home game of the season. The supporters will be there in their numbers and give us their usual backing, and it's something we look forward to at Griffin Park. We want to make it into a fortress, we felt we did at times last season and we want to be as consistent as we can there. We want to give the supporters something to shout about, we had some good games and good times there last season, and we want to start that right at the start of this season at home. Nottingham Forest gives us the opportunity to do that.'

Talking about the team, he discussed the spirit and atmosphere amongst them and our opening day defeat hasn't hit that.

'The atmosphere is still up there. They had a really good pre-season and everyone was looking forward to the first game. Obviously the first result was disappointing for us all but the performance wasn't. We didn't deserve to lose the game, and had we taken our chances we wouldn't have. We know there's not an awful lot to we need to do to not lose games like that. That's why we are looking forward to Saturday, to try and put in a performance but get the result with it.'

As for Forest more specifically, he went on to say.

'It'll be a tough game, they've won their first couple of games. They beat Millwall and then Shrewsbury on Tuesday. Like ourselves, they made 11 changes - we were just one short - but even they will say they were fortunate to win the game against Millwall, Millwall had a number of chances but they got that three points on the board. They've got some really good players there, and obviously Mark Warburton coming back to Griffin Park adds to the game but we have to concentrate on ourselves.'
