Smith & Watkins Reflect On Bristol City Point

Smith & Watkins Reflect On Bristol City Point

Head coach Dean Smith and Ollie Watkins have reflected on the point Brentford took from Bristol City in the midweek encounter.

Hosting Lee Johnson's side at Griffin Park for the game, Smith knew the two all draw with goals from Watkins and Neal Maupay really should've been a victory given the control we had on the game.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media following the game, Smith was largely at a loss when it came to understanding how we hadn't taken all three points given we had 24 shots compared to their 8.

'I am proud of how they played. If you can go and dominate teams like we did tonight, then I have no problem. If we play like that, week in week out, then we will be a top six team. I believe that Bristol City are a good team and there looked a massive gulf tonight. It was the most one-sided game in the Championship I have been involved in. How we didn`t get three points is beyond me but unfortunately a couple of ricochets have seen them score goals.'

Brentford were of course losing at the half time break before Watkins and Maupay struck.

'I thought Ollie was excellent tonight and he caused them problems all game with his ball carrying. It is wrong to single one player out because I thought that they were all excellent. Lasse ran the line really well and kept their centre-halves in trouble for 70 minutes. Neal has come on and scored a great goal. Romaine and Nico got the ball to Josh, Ollie, and Jota. Harlee and Yoann came in and did well. I am pleased with the whole team, it was an excellent team performance.'

With the injury sustained by Josh McEachran, he went on to say.

'Josh has gone over on this ankle and felt something. He has got stretchered off which was a disappointment because he was pulling the strings today. He looked fantastic out there and every bit a Premier League player to be honest. We are hoping that it is nothing serious and he will be back playing soon.'

Watkins was also speaking following the game, and he knew it should've been a victory as well but he was going to focus on the positives.

'We passed the ball well and created some good chances. I felt that we were unlucky to go into the break one down but we showed great determination to get back in it - it`s a shame we let it slip at the end. It was a relief to see the first goal go in, but it`s a shame it didn`t lead to a win. We had the three points in our grasp and we let them slip but hopefully we can learn from the experience, get the win at the weekend and go on a good run of form.'

He went on to say.

'It was a great ball in from Jota. I don`t score many headers so it was great to get up for that one and score my first Championship goal. The lads and the staff have told me that I played well this evening; I`m happy with my performance but as I said, it`s a shame we didn`t get the win.'

Adding.

'It was my first start alongside Romaine in the Championship and I feel as though there`s chemistry there already - that will only develop with time. I was pleased that Neal got his goal, too. He`s a great finisher and that`ll be a big boost for him.'
