Egan On Aston Villa Test

Egan On Aston Villa Test

Irish centre half John Egan has been previewing the game against Aston Villa this weekend and he knows these are the games you have to relish in the Championship.

Speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media at Jersey Road yesterday afternoon, Egan insisted that the mood within the camp remained positive despite our points tally so far this season and he was convinced we could turn it around across the month of September and really get ourselves going for the year.

That of course begins with Aston Villa at Villa Park this weekend.

'We know that we haven`t picked up as many points as we should have - there`s games that we should`ve won and didn`t but that`s football. The performances have been there and if we keep playing the same way the tide will turn. We`ve got a philosophy which we don`t want to steer away from; we want to keep doing things our way. Training has been very good this week; you can see that everybody is refreshed after the break. The belief is there 100%. The lads are on it every day in training and the appetite is there to go on and do well. We`re working our socks off to go and get some positive results.'

With Harlee Dean being one of the departures this summer transfer window, Egan said that whoever is handed the captain's armband moving forward will take the role on with pride.

'When I`ve captained the team this season it`s been an honour. The gaffer hasn`t said anything about who will take the armband, but I`m sure that him and the staff will decide that and we`ll see what happens. We got a good changing room - there`s some good leaders in there - so to captain the group you`ve just got to be yourself and lead by example.'

He added.

'Every club buys and sells players during the transfer window - it`s part and parcel of football. I was good friends with the lads that left - they were good teammates and good players - so I wish them well in the future, just not against Brentford! When we play Birmingham friendships will have to go to one side for 90 minutes.'

With seven fixtures in three weeks now on the cards for Brentford, he ended by saying.

'It sums up what the Championship is all about. It`s a long season and you play a lot of games, but every footballer will tell you they`d rather be playing games than training. We`ve got a trip to Villa Park on Saturday and these are games you`ve got to relish. Villa have got a good team - they`ve spent a lot of money - so it should be an entertaining game on Saturday.'
