Smith On Derby Draw

Smith On Derby Draw

Head coach Dean Smith has admitted it would've been gutting had Brentford not taken anything from Derby County last night.

Hosting Derby County at Griffin Park for the game, the visitors took the lead in the 15th minute and Brentford had to wait until Ollie Watkins salvaged a point in the 86th minute.

Having dominated possession on the day and had plenty of chances, Smith knew a point was the least we had deserved and meeting with the media post game he told the Official Site.

'It was well deserved. We couldn`t put balls in the box so we had to be creative, especially with players behind the ball. We had to move the ball. We have footballers who can handle the ball so we had to be patient. The fans were very patient as well because they could see what we were trying to do. My only disappointment is the manner of the goal that we conceded. It was a big lump up the pitch and we didn`t deal with the first or second ball. It wasn`t what we deserved but the reaction to that was excellent. It was a little slow in the opening 20 minutes but we stepped it up a little bit and we caused them a number of problems.'

With over 70% possession across the whole game, the statistic read 83% for the opening 45 minutes and Smith went on to say that he was pleased to see the side stick to the game plan and not overly force things as we looked for the leveller.

'It was very difficult but we have a great belief in what we do. If you look at Derby County then all their players have Premier League experience and they were second best tonight. They had to defend for long periods. We had 76 per cent possession and 14 shots to their three which shows that we were the aggressors all game. We knew tonight would be a tough game. You only have to look at their bench with Chris Martin, Matej Vydra, Andi Weimann, and Chris Baird. The lads aren`t fazed by anything and will look forward to Middlesbrough now.'

Smith also admitted that following victory over Bolton Wanderers, he also knew it was vital we remained unbeaten in this one but clearly we have to improve our conversion rate as we go in search of more wins.

'It was very important to get something tonight. It would have felt awful if we had lost playing like that tonight. You come in front of the media and it is the same old story. People who weren`t here won`t have seen what has gone on. It is great that we got something and we certainly deserved it. If you are having as much possession as we had then we have to take those chances.'
