BBC Report - Championship Details For 2017

BBC Report - Championship Details For 2017

The BBC's Price of Football annual survey was released this week, and their investigation shows that the price of Championship football has fallen in 2017.

Compared to the last survey (2016/17), where the BBC found that ticket prices alone in the Championship had risen by 36% and that did represent the biggest ticket price increase across the whole of the United Kingdom, the 2017 edition showed that matchday pricing had now fallen.

With the Championship this year potentially being the most competitive it has been given the sides involved, the BBC discovered that the average cost of a single home ticket had come down from £22.11 to £20.58. Last year was a six year high, so it's nice to see a drop this time around. However the Championship still boasts the most expensive away ticket across any league in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as the EFL do not have a cap on away ticket prices - the Premier League are capped at £30.

The average most expensive ticket this year is £31.69 compared to a Premier League average of £29.50. The last edition found the most expensive ticket on average cost £31.57. The average cheapest away ticket comes in at £22.42 with Hull the cheapest at £12 on face value.

The study also showed that more than two thirds of Championship clubs reduced or froze their matchday ticket prices, whilst on a Season Ticket standpoint at least half had cut prices or frozen as well. The average Season Ticket cost rose slightly this year, going from £335.15 to £337.02 and the most expensive average also rose from £573.50 to £588.02.

The highest average price an adult would pay for a single match ticket dropped from £36.13 to £35.96.

In headline news, the most expensive Season Ticket falls to Fulham who charge £926, however they also have the third cheapest Season Ticket in the division with a price of £254. Hull City come in on face value at £252 with Birmingham City being the lowest at £230.

The most expensive set is completed by Norwich at £856.50 and Ipswich at £842.

On the pie front, Fulham are also the most expensive with a whopping £4.50 price tag whilst the cheapest goes to Burton Albion at £2.80.

The cheapest cup of tea also goes to Burton at £1.50 with Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday the most expensive at £2.50.

On a shirt front the most expensive adult goes to Aston Villa at £55, with Burton taking the cheapest option at £39.99. On a junior front, Sheffield Wednesday charge £25, with Middlesbrough and Aston Villa the most expensive at £45.

As the data is sifted through, the above link will lead you to club specific information, but as ever, Vital Football will give a club by club breakdown in the coming days.
