Hailing from the highly successful Sodje family (9 brothers....four in total play football in England and one played Rugby league!) Sam looked a bit of a gamble transfer when Martin Allen brought him in from Margate in 2004.
A good goal scoring but bad disciplinary history preceded him but Sam proved to be a stellar signing.
Establishing himself as a quick footed flair centre back, Sam played over 80 games and scored 12 goals mostly headers from set pieces. He enjoyed legendary status amongst Bees fans due in no small part to his style of play, confident approach and crazy dancing goal celebrations.
He caught the eye of many during two FA cup runs under Allen in the 2004/05 and 05/06 season acquitting himself well against Southampton and most notably at home against Sunderland when the Bees dumped the Premiership team out of the FA cup. Who could forget Sam doing a Cruyff turn past then Irish international Gary Breen in the penalty box?
Success brought Sam an inevitable move to Reading but he still looks at his period at Brentford and particularly under Martin Allen with great fondness.
He tells the story of having fallen out with Allen at training the Gaffer refused to speak to him for several weeks despite picking him for every game he was available. Eventually he made a piece offering by knocking on Sams` hotel door at 6am before an away game and handed him, without a word , a brand new pair of football boots. Sam went on to score in that game and recalls before most matches Allen made him feel like he could beat Manchester United. Happy times.
