Malcolm McDonald

Position

Defender / Manager

Pen Pic

McDonald played for and managed The Bees.
He was an immaculate full back or wing-half who joined the club as player-coach in 1946 before turning to management of Kilmarnock.
He returned to Griffin Park in 1957, and in his first two seasons almost won promotion with a virtual home-grown team. He couldn`t keep it up, and the side was relegated in 1962 - but with Malky still in charge bounced straight back and nearly got another promotion (missing out by two points).
During that time he built what some still reckon is Brentford`s best-ever team - with Mel Scott at centre-half, and the all-international strike force of Johnny Brooks, Bill McAdams and John Dick.
A quietly-spoken man, Malky was famous for answering the regular training ground question about how the team was doing with the simply reply…….."You could say the status is - remaining quo"!!
